Here’s a tip to the DJs who follow my various pages. If you want to do harmonic mixing but don’t want to spend money on software…
Download this gem from the following site:

Once you have the program installed and open, go to the preferences and under “What to write” select “Custom Codes”.
Then decide whether you want to go with the “Camelot” system or the “Open Key Notation” system. Most DJs today are using the “Camelot” system, but apparently the latest version of the hugely popular Native Instruments Traktor DJing software has recently implemented a harmonic mixing key recognition feature and it’s using the “Open Key Notation” system. So maybe you want to prepare for that upcoming Traktor wave, but I hope Traktor will eventually incorporate the “Camelot” system into their software. Of course if you already have the latest edition of Traktor, then you’re already mixing in key and can ignore this guide. I chose to stick with the “Camelot” system as I had already previously been using it and my friends use it. At the end of this blog I make a note of how to swtich between the two notations.

…set the appropriate “Custom key codes” in the KeyFinder software’s preferences knowing that DUR means major and moll means minor in German. Also remember that G-flat major is the same thing as F-sharp major. And remember that the symbol for flat looks like a weird b. If you go with the “Open Key Notation”, you might need some other pointers… I’m not sure whether you’ll need other pointers because like I said, I’m sticking with the “Camelot” wheel.
After that, just run the KeyFinder program and use either a camelot wheel or an openkey wheel like this guy explains:

For switching between the two notations, apparently 8A=1m, 9A=2m, etc…
If you’re using vinyl, you’ll have to make a digital recording in order to run mp3s or wavs through the program. I’ve found that some of the features in the KeyFinder program don’t work so well but it’s only some app this guy threw together for a school project so just be happy you’re getting it for free. I’m playing around with some genres slowed out of their typical bpm range. There’s one dubstep track mixed into the rest of the four to the floor stuff, and half of a hard trance track slowed way down right at the beginning.
This mix is an ode to anonymity.

My old friend Tina Deroo was looking for a VJ for her athletic stretching rave. When I couldn’t find anyone else up to it, I decided to try out a little makeshift VJing. When the participants weren’t looking there were a couple technical experimenting glitches but apart from that I think it went pretty well. The Gaff was spinning vinyl.
